Vikings Fans Pack the House

Weeks of preparation for the first Vikings game of the season officially paid off last Thursday (September 9th) here in New York.  We had communicated to as many fans as we could reach, as well as had them pass along the word, that we would have a guest list...and it was a true success.

The game didn't start until 8:30 and fans were already lining up at 6, waiting to get inside Bar None.  Many were wearing jerseys, shirts, hats, beads, some with their faces painted, some with boas, and some wearing Vikings helmets...all came out to cheer on purple and gold.  By 8:30 Bar None was packed and we were ready for our rematch against the Saints.

Although the game didn't end as we'd hoped, it was still great to see all the fans show up for it as well as  have them hang out after it was over.  Many were dancing around the bar, catching up with other fans they haven't seen, and having a good time.  We truly hope this continues throughout the entire season.

We also have some fun things to look forward to in the coming weeks.  One of the Vikings NYC organizers was able to get two tickets to the Monday night Vikings/Jets game and we will be raffling them off next week.  Tickets will be sold this weekend as well as next weekend and the drawing will be made at the end of next week's game.  Throughout the coming weeks we will also be raffling off other prizes as well.  We chose to do this for the fans.  So many devoted Vikings fans have shown up to Bar None week after week, year after year, and we thought it was time to give back.  This Vikings NYC club was created for one reason...the fans...and we plan to honor that.

We hope all you Vikings fans, New York and beyond, have enjoyed our start to this season and continue to have a great time.

Until next week.

Today is the Day

For many Vikings fans, we want to go back and have a "redo" from last year's NFC Championship game.  Especially the Vikings NYC fans.  Sharing a bar with Saints fans was never bad...until last year.  That was a hard day to keep our heads held high once the game was over.

Now, almost 9 months later we're back in the same situation...only this time, we're hoping for a different outcome.  At 8:30pm tonight the Vikings will take on the Saints in New Orleans and many, at least 100 have been added to our guest list at Bar None, Vikings NYC fans will be representing the Purple Pride here in the Big Apple.

60 minutes of playing time....all we're looking for are first downs and touchdowns to shut down the Saints (if Brees gets sacked a few times it wouldn't hurt either).  We have the tools - Peterson, Harvin, Allen, Berrian, Camarillo, the Williams brothers, and Favre to name a few - just show us what you've got boys.  Favre is also 3 touchdown passes away from 500.  Could it happen tonight?  Let's hope so!  But if we have to choose one thing for this game....I think we'd all prefer a Vikings win....especially against the Saints!

We have shared a few links on our Facebook fan page (Vikings NYC Fans) but wanted to make sure to share them here as well.

New Vikings NYC theme song?  Just listen - the video obviously doesn't fit with football - but the title of the song/main lyric is perfect for Vikings fans. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sM1Ahn0Osjo

Too Many Years Invested to Wager

With the hype of the game (Vikings vs Saints) tomorrow evening, there has been talk about whether the Vikings fans and Saints fans will have another "battle for the bar."  We have even received a couple calls from reporters to confirm the story.  The answer....is NO.  We will not be "wagering" our part of the bar for this game.  We will NEVER wager our part of the bar...because in fact, it is a VIKINGS BAR and has been for a lot longer than the Saints.

Back in 1993, when Bar None opened, it became the home to a group of Vikings fans living in New York City.  Former owner Aryl Robison, along with a few friends would meet up at Bar None each week to catch the Vikings games.  In the beginning they weren't able to get all the NFL games, so the group would meet up, go to a different bar airing the game to cheer on the Vikes, and then end back at Bar None to drink and chat.  This continued for a few years until the bar got satellite equipment in 1996 and was able to show all the games.

"The first few years there were probably about 6-10 Vikings fans, but as the years went on the fan club steadily grew and easily became the biggest fan club in the bar" Robison said.  In 2006 the Saints fans started occupying the back room of the bar and since then it has been called a Vikings/Saints bar.

Last year with the hype of the two teams doing so well and the NFC championship on the line, there was talk of a "battle for the bar."  We, the Vikings fans immediately declined that wager.  We have been going to Bar None for almost 20 years, keeping it a place that is known to Vikings fans and we would never take that away from them.

Rumors have even started this year, but again...we will not wager OUR bar.  We plan on being there for another 20 years and beyond.  Bar None IS the VIKINGS NYC bar and will remain that way for a long time.
